Mountain Huts in the Dolomites: Lavarella Hut

A century of hospitality in the hearth of the alps of the Dolomites

Barbara writes: “The story of the alpine refuge starts in 1912 when the first construction built by Mariangelo Frenner was used as barn and as mountain shelter”

1919 Mariangelo di San Vigilio di Marebbe, expands the refuge with parts of military constructions from the 1st World War.
At that time it was called “Small Fanes Chalet”. It was a simple alpine cabin made of stone where the first alpinists were offered a place to sleep and something to drink. Only in 1934 when the son of Mariangelo, Fritz Frenner (my father’s uncle) restored the building, it became a real alpine refuge.

1939 a fire destroyed it completely, but it was rebuilt in the same year again. Fritz Frenner died during the 2. World War and his brother Peter (my grandfather and owner of the Hotel Corona**** in San Vigilio) took over the business. In the 70ties my father Hanspeter succeeded him as manager and owner of the Lavarella Refuge.

The building has been renovated in 1980 and 1986. 1997 it got its todays appearance.
Still this very known refuge of the natural park is successfully run by my mother (enthusiastic cook) and my father (indisputable head), helped by my sister Anna and his irreplaceable husband Gábor.
My sisters and I lived every summer (from June to October) and every winter (from February until April – ski touring season) our fairy tale childhood at one of the most beautiful places of the world.

A childhood like Heidi… really enviable!

Since 2009 the guests can enjoy also a Finnish sauna in a wine barrel behind the refuge. At the moment it is even the highest located brewery of Europe with an own production of artisan beer: GA.BEER!

These childhood memories have taught me to love nature and to create an intrinsic place with it:

The B&B Les Gomines is the place where you can find peace,
hospitality and feel at home.

Beautiful BnB in the Dolomites
We had to stay here for a night before checking into a longer term hotel. The owners were very accommodating and helpful and made our stay very enjoyable.
The room and breakfast area were very clean and comfortable.
There is a short, steep climb to get to the BnB from the road, but we found it fine. About 50m from the front door is a bus stop that takes you to the main resort ski lifts and then through the town.
We would stay hear again.

Beautiful extraordinarily comfortable place to stay!

Beautiful extraordinarily comfortable place to stay!
Barbara is a wonderful hostess at this superb B&B. The rooms are ALL beautiful (perfectly depicted and described on their www site), and the hot tub a delight after a long day hiking in the Dolomites. Her breakfasts are delicious! Great location for getting into San Vigilio for dinners at night (lots of options!). Plan at least a few nights…

Charming place

Charming place
We stayed at Les Gomines four nights in late july. The breakfast was one of the best we’ve ever had! The owners were really friendly and helpful. The location is very convenient with good access to hiking trails. Really nice rooms with very comfortable beds. Everything was clean and in good shape.

Definitely a must stay
From the second we arrived they were so accommodating! She had a adorable little son who was so well behaved. The room was top notch. Felt like we were at home!!! Beds and comforters were so comfortable. Shades were automatic and made room nice and dark. Breakfast was quite the spread. Sauna was nice. Location was beautiful. We went during off season though and pretty much every place for diner was closed down. We want to posta restaurant and it was by far our favorite place to eat. Nicest woman ran the place and though she didn’t speak English she was so pleasant. Very pleased with our visit
